Digital Maturity Assessment and Strategy for an Animal Health Leader

1 min read

One of the leading international animal health organizations looked to build a holistic, centralized digitalization approach to drive growth and support future manufacturing strategy. The firm set out to understand site digital capabilities, identify paper or siloed processes, reduce technical debt, and build detailed roadmaps to deliver digital maturity.

Key achievements:

  1. Conducted digital maturity assessments across ~30 manufacturing sites worldwide.
    • Established current state maturity scores and landscape of site digital solutions
    • Defined pain points and challenges with reference to the solutions at the site
    • Evaluated current IT infrastructure and processes at the site
    • Identified quick wins for immediate value to the site
  2. Defined a holistic enterprise digitalization framework and standardized site, digital maturity roadmaps.
  3. Implemented digital dashboards with site-specific digitalization scores, heatmaps, and insights.
  4. Set the foundation for measurable improvements in agility, efficiency, and sustainability.

The challenge

  • The client’s global manufacturing and supply chain network operated with disconnected systems and varying levels of digital maturity across its sites. Many processes were paper-based or dependent on local tools, which limited central visibility, slowed decision-making, and made scaling digital initiatives difficult.
  • Each site managed its own technology priorities and investments, leading to duplicated efforts, poor lifecycle management (equipment & software), and growing security risks. Lacking centralized governance or enterprise roadmap, digitalization efforts were fragmented and often misaligned with enterprise goals.
  • The organization recognized that the future of manufacturing depends on data integration, automation, and advanced analytics. Leadership wanted to build a cohesive approach that would connect people, systems, and data across all sites, laying the groundwork for predictive, autonomous, and sustainable operations capable of driving measurable business outcomes.

The solution

To address these challenges, the client partnered with C&F to design a comprehensive digitalization strategy enabled by a structured, data-driven assessment process informed by BioPhorum’s Digital Plant Maturity Model (DPMM), an industry-leading framework for evaluating digital capability in life sciences manufacturing.

  • Assessment & Framework: The initiative began with digital maturity assessments across ~30 manufacturing sites worldwide. Using the DPMM framework, each site was evaluated against key manufacturing dimensions across the value chain from manufacturing execution & quality to engineering and cybersecurity. The findings were consolidated into digitalization scores and heatmaps, offering leadership a clear, comparable view of maturity levels and opportunities across the network.
  • Roadmaps & Governance: Based on these insights, C&F helped develop site-specific roadmaps aligned with the organization’s broader manufacturing strategy. Each roadmap identified quick wins and medium to long-term priorities. This provided the Client with a strong foundation and guidelines to achieve stronger agility, efficiency, and sustainability.

Results

  • The program provided the client with a comprehensive, data-backed view of digital maturity, challenges, and digital solutions across its global manufacturing operations. Leadership was empowered to prioritize investments based on measurable insights, track progress across sites, and align future initiatives with enterprise strategy.
  • The new governance framework and technical roadmap established a foundation for scalable transformation: reducing duplication, improving cybersecurity, and accelerating the adoption of technologies such as predictive maintenance, AI, and real-time analytics.
  • As a result, the organization is now well positioned to transform their operations into a connected, scalable, and sustainable manufacturing network.
